Not for their sake, but for yours . . . Her ears droned out everything else he was saying. Forgive? Even if she were to forgive them, what would that change? She would still be too afraid to trust any one. If she had been younger, maybe. But after so many years of living like this. She sighed, "It's not so much about forgiving them or not. What's done is done but how can I learn to trust anyone when all people seem to do is betray me at their whim?" She danced in front of him nervously, she had never talked to someone about this, much less a stallion. She could feel her mind race off about "what ifs". She could feel some part of her telling her to run, hide, bury herself somewhere where no one would reach her or hurt her. She was getting so confused and torn up, Kaius was such a sweet stallion but was she willing to put herself out there to be hurt? There were too many ifs with trusting people and too many scars one would get.

Kaius nodded as she spoke, “You are correct in that assumption. It is hard to learn to trust when those you meet betray you. I must tell you that I never will,” he said quietly, noticing how uncomfortable she seemed. “I know you have probably heard those words many times, but I assure you I am not lying. You can trust me.” His words were kind, and his tone soothing. It was true the stag wanted more members in his herd, but he didn't want to push others into something they may not want. It's why Kaius hadn't brought up the subject of his herd to Tragedy at all, and why he held off in doing so. His golden pelt shimmered in the late morning light, his flaxen banners gently lifted up by the breeze that streamed through the area. He knew that the mare might not accept his proposal to join his herd, and he didn't want to push her away so soon. Instead, the brujo simply waited patiently, biding his time by listening and talking to Tragedy until he felt it was time to ask the important question.

Tragedy looked at the stag. He was so kind, his words reassuring like no one else's. She looked Kaius over, she could tell his words were real not just empty noises that filled the ears. He was strange but so was she. Just a different kind of strange. I know you have probably heard those words many times, but I assure you I am not lying. You can trust me. She nodded believing his words. Well some of them. She knew she had heard those very words on many times from god knows how many people. Each one saying, 'trust me, I won't hurt you, trust me' she could almost heard the voices herself coming from the roaring waterfall, the breeze in the branches, and the under tone of Kaius voice. She knew of course they were not real but the small, scared foal inside her wanted them to be. She shook her head as if shaking the ghost voices from her mind, "Yes . . .I can hear the .. .truth in your voice." she said as she looked up at him. Not just at him but looking him in the eye. She had not felt this bold since she was little. She looked around, it was as if colors were bursting from everything instead of just shadows and shades of grey. She looked back at the gold stallion. She smiled at him, this time it not only touch her lips but also her eyes, lighting them. She stopped smiling feeling a bit awkward much like a young foal trying to walk. Trust, like walking, was something you needed to learn you never really forget it but sometimes you have to relearn it in your lifetime.

He nodded once, dipping his head low in a more formal way. “I promise not to let you down, Tragedy.” His words were gentle, yet his accent seemed even thicker, and more robust than normal. Kaius didn't seem to pay any mind to it though, it seemed something in his mind had clicked when he uttered those words. Ebony eyes gradually unfocused as a certain memory pooled in his mind. It had been so long ago that those words were uttered, so many years ago. The sleek golden stallion now had been nothing but a disproportional yearling still growing into his body, and still developing his mind. He had slowly been growing more independent, but still ran back to his mother every time night began to settle. The mare had been beautiful, a very light palomino, slowly graying out with each passing year. She had been kind and gentle, yet firm and strict. She had taken care of her son and watched him slowly begin to grow into the magnificent stallion she knew he would become. She had never seen him finish growing though. Never seen what he could and eventually would become. The last night they had been together, the two were having a discussion on why the sky was blue. Kaius' mother, Fey, had told him a wonderfully fabricated legend of how the sky was a being that walked the earth with the sun and moon. Yet, because of his greed, the gods banished him to never walk the earth again, and to have his only company be the rising sun and the setting moon. Before they had gone to bed, she had told Kaius that she would never let him down like the sky had done to the gods. Those were the last words she had told him. The next morning a large stallion came to claim her, and he won her, leaving the young adolescent she had been caring for behind. Kaius blinked a few times, coming back to the real world. He focused back on Tragedy, feeling bad for simply zoning out like that, “I'm sorry...I was miles away.”

Tragedy nodded when he finally spoke. She looked at the world around them and found it was quite beautiful. I guess i never really noticed before. . . she thought wondering what other beauties laid out before her. But when she looked back at Kaius she could tell he was else where. She thought of saying something but she did not want to interup his thoughts. She assumed it was something important he needed to think through. Given this moment (almost) to herself she thought about things. Kaius was by far the most viturous person she had met, his words were only truth and she could tell he cared that she trust him. He had promised her he would never let her done and even though she had heard those very words from many people she had a gut feeling he was the only one would meant it. Why? She did not know but all she knew was his efforts to gain her trust were sincere. And no one could fake that. Oddly she was comfortable with trusting him. Which seemed rather strange but the two of them were strange so it made sense in her mind. She raised her head up when she heard his voice, 'I'm sorry...I was miles away' she nodded. "I know its nothing you need to apologize for." She smiled at him a bit. "You know . . . it kind of hurts smiling this much" she said with a soft laugh.

Kaius chuckled with her, his ebonite eyes warm. "I'm sure you will get used to the feeling,” he joked back, a smile lighting up his own features. He had not been this comfortable or open to another horse in quite a while, and it was a nice change. The golden stag knew he had made the right choice in choosing to stay in this place and claim a land, and things only seemed to be getting better. “You know, Tragedy, you are more than welcome to join my herd. If it is what you want,” he said suddenly, hoping he had not pushed anything. The stud had thought through what he had said before ever uttering it, and he was sure that it left room for the mare to decline. He hoped that she wouldn't, but neither did he want to push her into something that she was uncomfortable with. Harks swiveled back a fraction of an inch, hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

Tragedy laughed a little when he spoke, 'I'm sure you will get used to the feeling,'She smiled again, "Yea? I'm sure I will some day." She joked with him. She could not remember any time in her life where she has joked. She could not believe that she was standing here with someone she not only liked but trusted. Well, to an extent. She knew she could trust him but she was not quite ready to trust him 100%. Some day she might but not today, not just yet. And like that Kaius words dropped from his mouth and in her ear. 'You know, Tragedy, you are more than welcome to join my herd. If it is what you want,' The words "If thats what you want" rang in her head until she thought she would die to hear those words again. It was her choice she did not have to join. She almost wanted to say no just for the fact of being able to say no. But could she walk out on a stag-no not just a stag, Kaius, her friend. This was not just so every day decision, at least not with her. And it had been so long since she had been in a herd. What if she could not fit in, what if they thought she was strange and wanted her gone? Kaius would never make her leave, she knew this. She looked up at him with a little smile, "I . .i would . .like it very much to join your herd, Kaius."

The gilded stag's smile widened as the fae agreed to become part of his herd. “I'm glad to hear that,” he said kindly, bumping her shoulder gently with his own. Crème banner covered warm ebony eyes as Kaius shifted his weight from one hoof to the other. He knew that kindness was more persuasive than force, and was happy to see that this situation worked in both of the horses' favors. “I hope you'll enjoy being apart of my herd, although there aren't many members yet,” he said with a quiet chuckle. As he thought about what being a leader would be like, he suddenly remembered a small tradition that stallions' had passed down through the generations, and looked to Tragedy. “I'm sorry, but I must give you a..um..claiming nip,” he said, trying to remember if that was the correct name or not. He normally spoke very eloquently, and so the lack of finesse in his words was uncommon to hear. Very tentatively, the stallion craned his thick neck, gently nipping Tragedy on her shoulder like so many studs before him had done, claiming Tragedy as a member of his herd. It meant Kaius was now responsible for her safety and protection from other horses.

She nodded when he said he was glad to hear she was joining. She was glad as well, she had never thought someone could be this kind. Especially a stallion.'I hope you'll enjoy being apart of my herd, although there aren't many members yet,' She nodded she did not care if he had a large herd or if it was just the two of them. "I don't mind and I'm sure I will love it. "she said said with a smile. The idea of smiling was becoming more and more easy for her to image and actually smile. I'm sorry, but I must give you a..um..claiming nip, Tragedy's smile faded, she knew he did not want to but had too. "It's okay . .. I understand." she jumped a bit as he gave her his claiming nip. She was okay with it though, this now meant she was part of his herd. It meant so much to her, a new beginning, a friend, trust. The small voice in the back of her mind posed, but for how long? She shook her head a bit tossing aside the hateful words.
